Many people use drugs to escape physical and emotional problems/ discomfort. For example relying on cocaine to boost ones energy and confodence. Unsing sleeping pills to control panic attacts.

You mention that a risk factor for becoming an addict is difficulty dealing with painful feelings and/or experiences. I think this is what motivates a large majority of people to use drugs: as a way to self-soothe and cope. Therefore, to help somebody quit drugs these painful feelings/experiences have to be addressed and dealt with so that the person can resolve them or reduce them. The person will then have an easier time quitting drugs since at least they no longer need them as a way to numb themselves or make themselves feel better. Rose Marie.
